2 Samuel
The Davidic Covenant: a Throne Forever
Through the prophet Nathan, God promises King David an everlasting dynasty and throne. The 9th-century BC Tel Dan Stele independently confirms the Davidic dynasty was a real political power, and the Qumran scroll 4Q174 shows Jews reading the oracle's promised 'seed' messianically a century before Christ. The Church identifies Jesus, 'son of David,' as the oracle's ultimate fulfillment, his kingdom without end (Luke 1:32-33).

The Tel Dan Stele: House of David
In 1993-94, excavators at Tel Dan uncovered fragments of a 9th-century BC Aramaic victory stele in which a hostile king boasts of defeating the 'king of the House of David' (bytdwd) — the earliest text outside the Bible naming David's royal line. It shows Judah's dynasty still ruling and known by David's name to an enemy roughly 150 years after his traditional reign.
